2012 - 2013 Pell Grant Eligibility
Undergraduate students interested in the Pell Grant for the 2012-2013 school year must complete the FAFSA application. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) determines if you are eligible for a Pell Grant by taking your current financial and family information. This information is compiled to determine how much you should be able to contribute towards your education for that particular school term. Students with a low EFC (Expected Family Contribution) will be able to qualify for a Pell Grant.
Students considered low-income will be eligible to receive the Pell Grant. In order to determine if you are considered low-income, students must complete the FAFSA application either online or through traditional US mail. Students that mail their application are advised to send a request receipt for confirmation that their application is received. If you are eligible for a Pell Grant, your financial aid office will contact you with an award letter indicating the total Pell Grant award amount you will receive during the 2012-2013 school year.
The federal government has made some changes to the Pell Grant eligibility. Students must now:
1) Have at least an accredited high school diploma or GED to be eligible for the Pell Grant
This impacts many international students since they may have attended school in their foreign country, which isnít accredited by a US governing accreditation education board.
2) Students are only eligible to receive the Pell Grant for up to 12 semesters.
This impacts many working adults going back to school, since they have other priorities and obligations besides school. Also, many working adults take fewer units than the average student per semester, so it takes longer to complete their education program.
3) Students that make $23,000 or less will now be eligible to receive the maximum Pell Grant of $5,550 for the 2012-2013 school year.
Previous years, students that made $30,000 or less were eligible to receive the full Pell Grant amount, but now the maximum income level is $23,000.
